The Invitation

“According to His great mercy, He has caused us to be born again to a living hope…”

~ Peter 1:3b (ESV)

Neil and I are standing at the back of the church, he with one boy and I with the other. People keep turning around and glaring. The butterflies in my stomach must have a caffeine buzz. A lady sitting in front of Judah just leaned over and whispered to her husband. Another glare. Now someone’s whispering to Neil. Maybe she has another “seating” option for us to see our friends get married.

Yep. I was right. We were just asked to leave. Neil says, We’ll just stand in the foyer.” Tears sting my eyes like little needles as I focus on the groom finally getting to say his vows.

At the reception, the wedding coordinator assures me we are welcome. Our friend, the groom, thanks us for coming. Long, tight hugs all around as we thank him for inviting us. “I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m so glad you came.”

On the way home, my thoughts turn to another Groom who’s invited us to participate in His wedding. He longs for my boys to engage in the everlasting dance of eternity. I’ll focus on the Groom and, regardless what others may say, teach my sons to say the words I learned: “I do.”

Come to the cradle. Kneel before the King, His promised hope. This invitation’s for you, too.

Thank you, Father, for the hope of our salvation!
