The Future is Wide Open

I love Noah’s bedtime prayers! Several nights ago, he thanked God for God. At first, I chuckled. As I thought more about it, it really is quite profound. Thank God for God. Where would we be without Him?

A couple nights ago, I decided to tell him about our upcoming relocation to Virginia in six weeks. Because of Noah’s autism, he needs a LOT of prep time! Noah, like many people, hates change. Just this week we’ve secured a house, contacted schools, and I think we may have even found a church, which is HUGE! My hubby, Neil, has had a chance to explore the area, price groceries, find a gym, and a great little coffee shop that beats Mazama’s in Dripping Springs (sorry, Mazama’s for all you locals)! I figured then was as good as a time to begin the preparation process with him. So, here’s how our conversation went:

Me: Noah, would you like a bigger bedroom?

Noah: No.

Me: Would you like a bigger house with a bigger back yard?

Noah: No.

Me (sighing): Well, Noah, Dad’s work is going to move us to a new house.

Noah: NO! No bigger house! Stay in Westview house?

Me: Well, we will have a new street address, a new house, and a new school. Did I push it too far?

Noah: NO new street! NO new house! NO new school.

After about ten minutes, I decided to use another tactic –sort of. I just wanted to console him at this point. I mean, I chose bedtime to tell him!

Me: Noah, February, we will stay in the Westview house and you will still go to your high school. In fact, tomorrow, you’ll go back to school. We will stay here this month. How about we pray? You go first.

Noah: Dear Heave’ly Father, thank You for us staying in the Westview house. In Jesus’ name, amen.

I looked up.

Me: Noah, we don’t name and claim what we want from God. But I love how you thank God for this moment. Right here. Right now. Change is hard, Noah; but it’s good. Change is always hard. But with Jesus, it’s always good. Our future is wide open when we follow His lead.

Change. It’s inevitable. It’s constant. And in God’s hands, it’s always good. I’m excited for our unknown future. It’s wide open with promise –even if it’s hard.
